A historic upset and a breakthrough for Italian tennis at Wimbledon 2024
In short: The 2024 Wimbledon women's singles tournament delivered more than just a trophy. From a defending champion's shock exit to a record-breaking semifinal, the tournament rewrote the history books for several players, marking a significant shift in the landscape of women's professional tennis.
Barbora Krejčíková secured her first Wimbledon singles title and her second major singles title overall by defeating Jasmine Paolini in a three-set battle. The final scoreline of 6–2, 2–6, 6–4 underscored the intense competition of the tournament. While Krejčíková claimed the victory, the event was defined by several historic milestones for other competitors. The intense match between Paolini and Donna Vekić set a new record for the longest women's semifinal in the tournament's history. This marathon contest lasted for two hours and 51 minutes.
Jasmine Paolini's run was particularly noteworthy for Italian tennis. She became the first Italian woman during the Open Era to play in both a Wimbledon semifinal and final, as well as the first from her country to reach finals in two separate majors. Additionally, Paolini achieved a rare feat by reaching back-to-back French Open and Wimbledon finals, a distinction not held by any woman since Serena Williams in 2016.
The tournament also saw significant upsets that disrupted established hierarchies. Defending champion Markéta Vondroušová suffered a first-round exit against Jéssica Bouzas Maneiro. This was only the second time in the Open Era that a defending Wimbledon champion lost in the opening round, the first instance being Steffi Graf's defeat to Lori McNeil in 1994. Additionally, the event was the last major tournament for the former world No. 1 and three-time major winner 1 Angelique Kerber, who was defeated by Yulia Putintseva during the opening round.
