How a rookie quarterback and massive roster turnover transformed the Washington Commanders
In short: After a dismal 4–13 record in 2023, the Washington Commanders underwent a total metamorphosis. By signing a league-high 26 free agents and drafting Jayden Daniels, the franchise snapped long-standing droughts to secure their best regular season since 1991.
The 2024 season marked a radical departure from the previous year's struggles. Following the firing of head coach Ron Rivera, owner Josh Harris overhauled the front office, hiring general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn. This leadership change coincided with a massive roster turnover; the team had the lowest number of returning players from 2023, opting instead to sign 26 free agents—the highest in the league.
Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the 2024 NFL draft's second overall pick, drove this revival. In a landmark debut, Daniels became the first NFL quarterback to record 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He went on to set an NFL record for most rushing yards by a rookie quarterback and earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
The team's offensive resurgence was punctuated by a 485-point season, tying for the franchise's second-most total points. This offensive surge, supported by wide receiver Terry McLaurin—who set a franchise record with 13 touchdown catches—led the Commanders to a 12–5 record. This achievement represents the largest win improvement over two seasons in the team's history and their first winning regular season since 2016.
The season's momentum carried them to their first playoff win since 2005 and their first NFC Championship Game appearance since 1991. Although their run ended against the Philadelphia Eagles, the 'Cardiac Commanders' had successfully snapped the longest active droughts in the conference.
