How sixteen European teams fought for the final four spots in the 2026 World Cup
In short: The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup was not just about group stage dominance. For sixteen European nations, the dream of reaching the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States came down to a high-stakes, single-leg play-off bracket held in March 2026.
The UEFA second round, commonly known as the European play-offs, served as the final hurdle for teams failing to secure direct qualification. The field consisted of twelve runners-up from the initial qualifying groups, supplemented by four teams selected based on their performance in the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League. This hybrid selection process ensured that success in the Nations League provided a secondary path to the World Cup for teams that finished outside the top two in their respective qualifying groups.
The sixteen participants were divided into four distinct paths, each functioning as a mini-tournament. Within each path, two single-leg semi-finals were held on 26 March 2026, followed by a final on 31 March 2026. The structure was rigid: Pot 1 teams hosted Pot 4, while Pot 2 teams hosted Pot 3. The host for each path final was decided by a separate draw. To maintain intensity, matches that remained level after normal time proceeded to 30 minutes of extra time, with a sixth substitution permitted, before resorting to penalty shoot-outs if necessary.
The format was finalized by the UEFA Executive Committee in Nyon on 28 June 2023. By the time the dust settled in March 2026, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sweden, Turkey, and the Czech Republic emerged as the victors of their respective paths, securing their places in the final tournament. The competition proved prolific, with 39 goals scored across 12 matches, averaging 3.25 goals per game. Notably, disciplinary rules were adjusted to prevent yellow card accumulation from impacting the finals, as cards from the group stage expired before the play-offs began.
The draw, held on 20 November 2025 in Zurich, was presented by Melanie Winiger and featured former stars Marco Materazzi and Martin Dahlin. By the conclusion of the process, the winners were assigned to their respective groups for the World Cup: Bosnia and Herzegovina to Group B, Sweden to Group F, Turkey to Group D, and the Czech Republic to Group A.
