The 2026 Colombian football season balances two distinct tournament formats under World Cup pressure
In short: The 79th season of Colombia's top-tier football league, Liga DIMAYOR, is a unique split-format experiment. To accommodate the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Apertura and Finalización tournaments operate under different rules, featuring a mix of single-elimination playoffs and traditional group stages to crown two separate champions by year's end.
The 2026 season represents a significant logistical challenge for Colombian football. Because of the FIFA World Cup, the league’s governing body, Dimayor, held an Extraordinary Assembly in December 2025 to finalize a compressed schedule. The Torneo Apertura, which concluded on 8 June 2026, required an accelerated timeline to finish by 5 June. Consequently, officials abandoned the usual semifinal group stage in favor of a single-elimination playoff format, reminiscent of the 2021 Apertura. Junior emerged victorious in this opening tournament, defeating Atlético Nacional 3–1 on aggregate to claim their twelfth league title.
In contrast, the second half of the year, the Torneo Finalización, adheres to a more traditional structure. Beginning on 24 July and concluding on 22 December 2026, it utilizes a round-robin first stage followed by a semi-final group phase. This dual-tournament system ensures that two independent champions are crowned, both of whom earn automatic qualification for the 2027 Copa Libertadores group stage. International berths are further distributed through a combined annual table, which also serves as the basis for the league's complex relegation system.
The 2026 season also marks a notable identity shift for one of the league's participants. La Equidad has rebranded as Internacional de Bogotá following a takeover by the Tylis-Porter Group. This change reflects the broader evolution of the league, which currently features twenty teams, including newly promoted Jaguares and Cúcuta Deportivo. Relegation remains a high-stakes affair, determined by a three-year rolling average of points earned across all first-stage matches. This system, which tracks performance from 2024 through the end of 2026, ensures that consistency over time—rather than a single bad season—dictates which clubs drop to the second tier.
