Peru's top football league enters its 110th year with a revamped competitive structure
In short: The 2026 Liga 1 season marks over a century of Peruvian professional football. With eighteen clubs competing for the title, the tournament features a complex playoff system designed to reward consistent performance across two distinct stages. Defending champions Universitario face a stiff challenge as new teams join the fray.
The 2026 campaign represents the 110th iteration of Peru's premier football competition. This year, the league features eighteen clubs, a reduction from the previous season. The field includes the top sixteen finishers from 2025, joined by newly promoted Cajamarca and Deportivo Moquegua, both of which are making their historic debut in the top flight. These newcomers replaced Ayacucho, Alianza Universidad, and Binacional, the latter of which suffered relegation after a mid-season disqualification on 19 August 2025.
The season is structured into two distinct phases: the Torneo Apertura, which concluded in May, and the Torneo Clausura, running from July through November. Alianza Lima secured the Apertura title early, defeating Los Chankas on 23 May 2026. While winning a stage provides a path to the championship playoffs, success is contingent on finishing within the top eight of the aggregate league table. This cumulative table also dictates international qualification for the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, as well as the two relegation spots.
The playoff mechanism is designed to balance stage-based success with overall league performance. Typically, the winners of the Apertura and Clausura join the top two teams from the aggregate table in a semi-final round. However, the structure is dynamic; if a stage winner also ranks in the top two of the aggregate table, they receive a bye to the finals. Should a single club dominate both stages, they are crowned champions automatically, shifting the playoff focus to determining the runner-up and remaining international qualifiers. This intricate system ensures that while individual tournament victories matter, sustained excellence throughout the year remains the ultimate benchmark for success.
