A new era of competition: the 2026 NBA All-Star tournament
In short: The 2026 NBA All-Star Game moved away from traditional formats, adopting a high-stakes round-robin tournament. Hosted at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, the event pitted American teams against an international squad, marking a significant shift in how the league celebrates its global talent during the 2025–26 season.
The 75th edition of the NBA All-Star Game, held on February 15, 2026, introduced a three-team round-robin format. This structure featured two American squads—the USA Stars and the USA Stripes—and one international squad, Team World. To accommodate NBC's coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics, the games were scheduled for 5 p.m. EST. This new format was influenced by the success of the NHL's 4 Nations Face-Off and the concurrent Winter Olympics.
The tournament was a test of endurance and skill, with all four games played under a 12-minute time limit. The USA Stripes ended the round-robin phase undefeated at 2–0, whereas the USA Stars took the second seed with a 1–1 tally. Team World was eliminated after failing to secure a win, finishing 0–2. In the championship match, the USA Stars defeated the USA Stripes to claim the title, with Anthony Edwards earning the All-Star MVP honors.
The selection process for the 24 players was a complex blend of fan, media, and player input. Fans accounted for 50% of the vote, while NBA players and media each contributed 25%. While the starters were determined by these cumulative votes, head coaches selected the reserves. Notably, the league implemented a rule prohibiting a coach from participating in consecutive All-Star Games, which prevented Oklahoma City Thunder coach Mark Daigneault from participating in 2026 after coaching in 2025.
The event also saw a return to certain traditions, such as the Shooting Stars competition, which replaced the Skills Challenge for the year. The Los Angeles Clippers brought this All-Star Weekend to the Intuit Dome, marking Inglewood's first such event since the Lakers played there in 1983.
