Two historic droughts and a 100-degree showdown meet in the 2026 NLDS
In short: The 2026 National League Division Series brings together heavyweights defined by long-standing absences from the summit. From the Dodgers' pursuit of unprecedented consecutive postseason streaks to a matchup between two franchises both searching for their first World Series title, the stage is set for high-stakes baseball.
The 2026 NLDS features two distinct narratives of dominance and drought. In one series, the Milwaukee Brewers face the San Diego Padres. This matchup is historically significant as it is the first postseason meeting between the two clubs, both of whom entered the league in 1969 and both of whom are currently enduring World Series droughts lasting over 50 years. The Brewers enter as the top seed with a 103–59 record, having secured the best overall record in baseball and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The second series pits the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers against the Atlanta Braves. The Dodgers, boasting a 100–62 record, have achieved a 14th consecutive postseason berth, a feat that ties the record held by the Atlanta Braves (1991–2005, excluding the 1994 strike).
This series marks the sixth postseason meeting between these two clubs, a frequency that ties them with several other historic NL matchups. The two teams share a deep divisional history, having competed in the NL West from 1969 to 1993. Conditions for these games have proven extreme. One matchup reached 100 °F (38 °C), making it the second-hottest MLB postseason game in history, surpassed only by the 2017 World Series. The intensity is matched by high-leverage drama, such as the Brewers' Game 1 victory, which was decided by a walk-off two-run single by Jackson Chourio, and the Dodgers' power display, including Max Muncy hitting his 17th career postseason home run.
