A 1965 travelogue captures the daily rhythms of life across the Afghan landscape

Afghanistan 1965 Reel 35 of 40 · 17:57 · Video: Penn Museum · Watch at the source

In short: In June 1965, chemical engineer Watson Kintner documented a journey through Afghanistan, capturing everything from the engineering marvels of the Salang Pass to the intricate craft of local bazaars. This unedited footage offers a rare, granular look at a country in motion, preserved by the University of Pennsylvania Museum.

Watson Kintner, a pioneer in vacuum tube standardization at the Radio Corporation of America, spent 36 years traveling to over 30 countries. Beginning in 1933, his extensive travels culminated in a massive collection of films, including a series documenting Afghanistan in 1965. Reel 35 of this collection, filmed between June 12 and June 14, provides a vivid snapshot of the region, spanning from the Salang Pass to the town of Hazrat-e-Iman.

The footage functions as an ethnographic record of mid-century Afghan life. Kintner’s camera lingers on the mechanics of daily survival and commerce: farmers preparing rice fields with bullock-drawn sledges, blacksmiths operating hand-pumped bellows, and metalworkers hammering bowls with wooden tools. The reel documents the infrastructure of the era, including the Salang Pass tunnel, while also capturing the domesticity of the Uzbek tribe, showcasing their yurt frameworks constructed from lashed branches and woven reeds.

Beyond the industrial and agricultural scenes, the film highlights the cultural landscape of the 1960s. It records the intricate mosaic decorations of the shrine at Hazrat-e-Iman, the bustling atmosphere of tea shops, and the specialized work of local artisans, such as radio repairmen and cloth merchants. By documenting these specific, unedited moments—from the cooling of soft drinks with mountain snow to the precise use of pan balance scales in grain markets—Kintner preserved a detailed, multifaceted view of a society that remains a vital part of the Penn Museum’s historical archives today.
