A 1953 travelogue captures the vanishing artisanal rhythms of rural Pakistan
In short: In 1953, chemical engineer Watson Kintner filmed his journey toward Kohat, Pakistan. His unedited footage offers a rare, granular look at mid-century craftsmanship, from hand-thrown pottery and wood-block printing to the surprising industrial operations of local gun factories, documenting a world of manual labor before the age of mass automation.
Watson Kintner, a chemical engineer at the Radio Corporation of America and a pioneer in vacuum tube standardization, spent 36 years traveling to over 30 countries. His 1953 Pakistan collection, which includes ten reels of unedited footage, serves as a visual archive of a rapidly changing landscape. Reel 8 specifically focuses on the journey toward Kohat, providing an intimate look at the daily lives of local artisans and the infrastructure of rural tribal areas.
The footage reveals a society deeply rooted in manual skill. Kintner documented smiths working with hammers and awls, potters shaping clay on hand-turned wheels, and craftspeople engaged in wood-block printing and intricate hand embroidery. The film also captures the practical side of local commerce, showing the mending of cups with hand tools and the production of woven cots, known as charpoy. These scenes illustrate a reliance on traditional techniques that defined the region's economy at the time.
Beyond individual crafts, the film provides glimpses into the industrial and social organization of the area. Kintner recorded the use of skin bellows in metalworking, the operation of large wheels for rope-making at wells, and the presence of armed men on bicycles. Most striking is the documentation of a local gun factory, where workers utilized anvils and specialized tools to produce firearms. These images of mud-grass huts and tribal compounds, contrasted with the sophisticated metalwork, offer a complex portrait of Pakistan in the early 1950s, preserved by a traveler with an engineer's eye for mechanical detail.
