The queen who ruled Egypt while her son was still a boy
In short: During the chaotic transition from the Seventeenth to the Eighteenth Dynasty, a woman named Ahhotep I stepped into the vacuum of power. While her son was too young to lead, she governed as a regent, uniting a fractured nation and securing the throne for the New Kingdom.
Ahhotep I (c. During the period of 1560–1530 BCE, this Egyptian historical icon was born to Pharaoh Senakhtenre Ahmose and Queen Tetisheri. The future Pharaoh Ahmose I's mother, she also held the status of royal spouse to Seqenenre Tao, who probably perished fighting the Hyksos. Following the deaths of both her husband and her brother-in-law, Pharaoh Kamose, in military campaigns, Ahhotep took on the mantle of leadership. A stela found at Karnak describes her as a ruler who 'knows matters' and 'upholds Egypt,' using language typically reserved for kings to describe her role in pacifying rebels and uniting the officer class.
Scholars suggest a sophisticated division of labor during her son's official reign. While Ahmose I focused on external border administration and solidifying royal power abroad, Ahhotep I appears to have managed the internal machinery of the state. Analysis of royal officials shows that those linked to her held civil positions, such as overseeing the 'double granary' or the palace, while those linked to her son were primarily involved in military and cultic duties. This suggests she remained a powerful administrative force even after her son came of age.
Her legacy was so profound that her cult continued to be honored until at least the Twenty-first Dynasty. However, her identity sparked a century of debate following the 1859 and 1881 discoveries of two separate coffins. While some once thought they belonged to the same woman, modern scholars generally distinguish Ahhotep I as the 'King's Mother' from the Deir el-Bahari find, while the Dra' Abu el-Naga coffin is now often attributed to a different queen, Ahhotep II.
