The leverage that saved a funk classic from a pop superstar
In short: In 1983, a funk band held a hit song hostage to ensure its release. When executives tried to bury it in favor of another track, the band threatened to hand the song to Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones. The gamble worked, securing a number-one hit and a Grammy.
The song "Ain't Nobody" was originally composed by Rufus keyboardist David "Hawk" Wolinski. It was built around a repeating synthesizer loop and a Linn LM-1 drum computer, though the band's drummer, John "JR" Robinson, opted to play live drums for the final recording. The track is technically complex, featuring a bass synth intro in 9/8 time that transitions into a 104 BPM common time groove in the key of E minor.
The path to the charts was nearly blocked by Warner Bros. executives who intended to lead the album with a different single. To protect their priority, Wolinski threatened to give the track to Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones for use on the landmark album 'Thriller.' The label relented, and the song debuted as a hit, reaching the top of the R&B charts by mid-October 1983 and eventually winning a Grammy in 1984.
The song's legacy is defined by its versatility as a canvas for other artists. It has been reimagined as a house hit by Jaki Graham in 1994, a "reggaefied" version by Diana King in 1995, and a hip-hop interpolation by LL Cool J in 1996. Even as recently as 2003, the track inspired a "pseudo-mashup" by Liberty X that blended its lyrics with the Human League's "Being Boiled."
Beyond the charts, the song has permeated global culture. It became a staple of UK football club chants and has been ranked among the greatest dance tracks and all-time songs by publications like VH1 and Rolling Stone.
