From the heart of Madrid to the heat of Israel
In short: Aitor Karanka's career is a study in high-stakes transition. After a decade as a reliable defender for Spain’s elite, he traded the pitch for the dugout, navigating the volatile waters of English football and international management before returning to his roots in Spanish sports leadership.
Karanka established himself as a dependable central defender in Spain's top flight. After debuting with Athletic Bilbao's reserves in 1992, he broke into the first team in 1993 under Jupp Heynckes. He spent three seasons there before moving to Real Madrid in August 1997. While often a backup, his experience was significant; he featured in 33 UEFA Champions League matches, including the 1999–2000 final against Valencia. His playing career was briefly interrupted by a heart condition during the 1998–99 campaign.
His transition to management began with a prestigious apprenticeship under José Mourinho at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013. Despite an offer from Chelsea to join Mourinho there, Karanka chose independence over security, seeking his own managerial identity. This path led him to the English Championship with Middlesbrough in 2013. His tenure was marked by tactical drama, including a controversial decision in April 2015 where he sent his goalkeeper forward for a corner, leading to a last-minute goal that cost his team promotion.
Karanka's managerial journey has spanned diverse leagues and cultures. He managed Nottingham Forest, Birmingham City, and even took on the challenge of avoiding relegation with Granada in La Liga during the 2022 season. His reach extended globally, from organizing coaching conferences for women's football to managing in the Israeli Premier League with Maccabi Tel Aviv. In July 2025, he returned to a high-level administrative role as sporting director for the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
