The CIA officer who sold out his own network for millions of dollars
In short: Aldrich Ames was a career intelligence officer tasked with hunting Soviet spies. Instead, he became one of the most damaging double agents in history. For nearly a decade, he compromised critical human sources and technical operations, leading to the execution of numerous intelligence assets while pocketing millions in illicit payments.
Aldrich Hazen Ames joined the CIA in 1962, eventually rising to a position where he specialized in the KGB and Soviet intelligence services. Despite early career warnings regarding his alcohol consumption and lack of attention to detail, he climbed the ranks to become a case officer within the Soviet/East European Division. In April 1985, while stationed at headquarters in Langley, Virginia, Ames made the fateful decision to volunteer his services to the KGB at the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D.C.
His betrayal was systematic and devastating. Ames provided the KGB with the identities of virtually every American asset operating within the Soviet Union. The consequences were lethal; multiple sources recruited by the CIA and FBI were identified, arrested, and executed by Soviet authorities. Throughout his tenure as a mole, Ames utilized clandestine dead drops to exchange classified documents for cash, receiving payments totaling over $2.7 million. This sum remains one of the largest amounts ever paid to an American for espionage activities.
The FBI launched an intensive investigation in May 1993 after noticing unexplained wealth and receiving intelligence about the loss of human sources. Surveillance revealed Ames’s continued contact with Russian handlers, including a trip to Bogota, Colombia. Following his arrest in February 1994, Ames pleaded guilty to espionage and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His wife, Rosario, who had assisted in his activities, also served a prison sentence. Ames remained incarcerated until his death in January 2026.
Ames’s case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within intelligence agencies. He was not merely a rogue actor but a trusted insider who weaponized his deep knowledge of agency operations against his own country. His actions forced a massive reassessment of U.S. counterintelligence protocols, highlighting the catastrophic potential of a single compromised official to dismantle years of intelligence gathering and endanger the lives of those working in the shadows.
