In short: For over seventy years, the red-haired, clumsy teenager of Riverdale seemed invincible. But in 2014, Archie Andrews met a violent end, leaving fans to grapple with the permanent loss of a character who had survived everything from love triangles to car wrecks.

Created in 1941 by John L. Goldwater, artist Bob Montana, and writer Vic Bloom, Archie Andrews was originally designed to capture the wholesome charm of Mickey Rooney’s Andy Hardy films. For decades, the character embodied the quintessential small-town American teenager, navigating the complexities of Riverdale High School, his legendary love triangle with Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge, and his role as the rhythm guitarist for the band The Archies.

However, the character's long-standing stability was shattered in April 2014. Archie Comics announced that the adult version of the character would die in the July 2014 issue of Life with Archie (#36). The death was not a quiet passing but a sudden act of violence; Archie was shot in the abdomen while attempting to save his friend, Senator Kevin Keller. This narrative choice effectively ended certain storylines, though the teenage version of the character continued in other series.

The impact of his death was felt throughout the fictional town. In the issue following his passing, Riverdale High School was officially renamed Archie Andrews High School in his honor. While the character's life ended, his legacy persisted through various media, from the 1940s radio era to modern adaptations like the CW drama Riverdale. Even the concept of his future remained a subject of debate, as the publisher once used a dream sequence in 2009 to explore two different possible futures: one where he married Betty, and another where he married Veronica.
