A desperate winter gamble to block the Russian advance

All Or Nothing - Winter Offensive In The Carpathians I THE GREAT WAR Week 27 · 9:55 · Video: The Great War · Watch at the source

In short: In the freezing heights of the Carpathian Mountains, Konrad von Hötzendorf launched a massive offensive to halt the Russian army. This video explores the strategic stakes of the winter campaign and the geopolitical pressure to deter new allies from joining the Entente.

The primary objective for the Austro-Hungarian forces was to prevent Russian troops from reaching the Hungarian plains. To achieve this, von Hötzendorf initiated a large-scale offensive in the Carpathian Mountains during the height of mid-winter.

Beyond the immediate tactical goal, the move served a diplomatic purpose: it was intended to demonstrate military power to Italy and Romania, both of whom were considering entering the war on the side of the Entente. Simultaneously, the North Sea saw the first Battle of Dogger Bank, resulting in the sinking of the German ship SMS Blücher.
