From Olympic training to pro wrestling: the evolution of Alpha Academy
In short: The bond between Chad Gable and Otis began in 2011 while they were training for the Olympic Games together. Today, that lifelong friendship serves as the foundation for a professional wrestling stable that has navigated championship reigns, internal betrayals, and dramatic splits.
Alpha Academy was officially formed on November 13, 2020, when Chad Gable recruited his longtime friend Otis. The group's origins are rooted in a deep personal history; the two began training together in Colorado Springs as far back as 2011 and remain neighbors today. This foundation allowed them to transition from being 'American Alpha' members to leaders of their own stable, eventually capturing the Raw Tag Team Championship on January 10, 2022. The group's trajectory was marked by significant shifts in persona and membership. In early 2021, Gable turned the team into "heels" by ordering Otis to attack Rey Mysterio. The roster expanded significantly over the following years: Maxxine Dupri joined on May 15, 2023, after a competitive rivalry for Otis's loyalty with Maximum Male Models.
Later, Akira Tozawa was inducted as a "junior member" in October 2023 to bolster their ranks. The stable eventually faced internal collapse due to Gable’s shift toward a solo pursuit of the Intercontinental Championship. After he attempted to train Sami Zayn and later turned on him, Otis, Dupri, and Tozawa walked out on Gable in June 2026. Despite various attempts at reconciliation—including a public apology from Gable in June 2026—the group fractured permanently when Dupri departed to join The Vision in July 2026. This history illustrates the volatile lifecycle of professional wrestling stables, where personal loyalty often clashes with individual ambition.
