From military high school to WWE stardom: the evolution of Apollo Crews
In short: Before he was a household name in professional wrestling, Sesugh Uhaa was a student at a military high school. Today, he is known to millions as Apollo Crews, a powerhouse athlete capable of blending high-flying agility with immense strength, a skill set forged through years of diverse athletic training.
Born on August 22, 1987, in Sacramento, California, Sesugh Isaac Uhaa's path to the squared circle was paved by a diverse athletic background. Raised in the Atlanta suburb of Stone Mountain, Georgia, he practiced amateur wrestling, soccer, football, and track and field. This multi-sport foundation, combined with his time at a military high school, helped develop the unique hybrid style that defines his career. He attended Auburn University before eventually graduating from Keiser University in 2025. His early interest in the sport was sparked by watching legends like The Rock and Kurt Angle.
His professional journey began in 2009 under the name Uhaa Nation, a moniker given to him by his high school weight training coach who remarked he was "as strong as a single nation." After a year on the Georgian independent circuit, he achieved a major breakthrough in 2011 when he signed with Dragon Gate USA, leading to his first professional appearances in Japan.
In 2015, Uhaa joined WWE's developmental brand, NXT, adopting the ring name Apollo Crews. He quickly ascended the ranks, making his main roster debut on Raw in April 2016. His tenure in WWE saw significant championship success, including winning the United States Championship in May 2020 and the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 37. After being released from the company in 2026, he returned to his roots, debuting for TNA and reverting to his original Uhaa Nation persona for Dragon Gate. His career has been marked by various shifts, including a brief period where his ring name was shortened to simply Apollo. He also competed in several Royal Rumble matches throughout his tenure.
