The dual-identity striker who became Algeria's youngest debut goal machine
In short: Born in France but destined for the Algerian colors, Amine Gouiri’s rise is a masterclass in elite development. From being named one of the world's best young talents at 16 to scoring historic hat tricks in Ligue 1, his journey reflects the complex intersection of heritage and high-performance sport.
Gouiri’s trajectory began as a standout for France's youth systems. In 2017, he became an internationally renowned prospect after finishing as the top scorer of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship, netting seven goals and earning a spot on the Team of the Tournament. That same year, he represented France at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in India, where he scored five goals total, including a brace in his tournament debut against New Caledonia.
His professional path saw him move through several French giants. He signed with Lyon in 2017 and made his first-team debut in November of that year. By 2020, he moved to Nice for €7 million, where he achieved a historic milestone: on August 23, 2020, he scored twice in his club debut against Lens. This feat made him the youngest player in the last 70 years to score at least twice on a French top-flight debut.
The most significant pivot in Gouiri's career occurred in late 2023 regarding his sporting nationality. After being born in France and holding dual citizenship, he officially committed to the Algeria national team following administrative resolutions. This transition culminated in his inclusion in the 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Most recently, his move to Marseille in early 2025 saw him reach new heights, including a hat trick featuring an overhead kick and earning him the UNFP Ligue 1 Player of the Month honors in February 2025.
