In short: In 2000, a safety concern during an American football game in Amsterdam forced officials to make a bizarre ruling. Because one end zone was deemed unsafe due to poor surface conditions, the teams were required to switch ends after every single change of possession.

The Amsterdam Admirals were established in 1995 as part of a strategic expansion by the NFL to relaunch the World League of American Football. Based in the Netherlands, they joined a diverse European circuit that included teams from Scotland, Germany, Spain, and England. The franchise spent its early years establishing a foothold in the region, eventually finding a home at the Amsterdam ArenA in 1996 after initially playing at the historic Olympisch Stadion.

The team's most peculiar moment occurred during the 2000 season. As preparations for Euro 2000 neared completion, the Admirals were forced to play their final home game of that year away from their primary stadium. Returning to the old Olympisch Stadion—a venue originally built in 1928 for the Summer Games—the officials discovered that the north end zone surface was in such poor condition it was ruled unsafe. To accommodate this, the rules were modified so that teams changed ends at every change of possession, effectively playing toward both goal lines throughout the match.

Despite these logistical hurdles, the Admirals saw significant competitive success. They reached the 1995 World Bowl with a 9–1 record, falling just short against the Frankfurt Galaxy. It took until 2005 for them to reach the summit, where they defeated the Berlin Thunder 27–21 to claim their first championship in the 13th edition of the World Bowl. To ensure veteran presence during 2007, the team employed a specific hiring scheme called the "Player Continuity Program" to sign running back Jonathan Smith and linebacker Derrick Ballard.
