Did a Childhood Passion For Writing Define a Career?
In short: Mildred Grieveson, who wrote under the pseudonym Anne Mather, began writing stories in her youth, even having her mother collect and discard early manuscripts. Despite early struggles, her dedication eventually led to her first published work in 1965, marking the start of a prolific career in romance fiction.
Mildred Grieveson, who used the pseudonym Anne Mather, had a lifelong inclination toward writing, developing stories from her childhood through her teens. These early writings evolved from simple children's adventures into more passionate themes, such as those involving gypsies. At one point, her mother would gather these manuscripts when her room became too untidy.
Her path to publication was unconventional. After marrying young and managing a household, she was encouraged by her husband to submit a story to a publisher, though she had never completed a full manuscript. When she was nineteen, in 1965, Mills & Boon published her first book, *Caroline*, under the name Anne Mather. It is noted that her initial five books were published in hardback by Robert Hale Ltd, London, even though Mills & Boon later released them in paperback.
Her career trajectory saw her become a key figure in the romance genre. In 1973, she was selected to be a launch author for the Harlequin Presents line of romance novels. This new line was characterized as being more sensual than the preceding Harlequin Romance series. She was chosen for this role alongside Violet Winspear and Anne Hampson due to her popularity and high output as an author.
The longevity of her work is evident in the various collaborations and collections. For instance, in 2002, she co-authored *Pacific Passions* with Robyn Donald, and later contributed to *Mediterranean Playboys* in 2004 with Michelle Reid and Jane Porter. Her body of work includes titles like *Leopard in the Snow* (1974), which was adapted into a 1978 film, demonstrating the cross-media reach of her narratives.
