In short: For years, fans at San Sebastián's Anoeta Stadium complained of a "cold" atmosphere. The culprit wasn't the weather, but a physical barrier: an athletics track that pushed spectators far from the pitch. Now, a massive redevelopment has erased that distance, turning the arena into one of Spain's most intimidating football venues.

Inaugurated on 13 August 1993 with a 2–2 draw between Real Sociedad and Real Madrid, the stadium was originally built for a capacity of 32,000. However, the presence of an athletics track meant fans were physically distanced from the action, a layout that many supporters found unsatisfying. This structural issue led to several failed attempts to overhaul the venue, including the 2004 Gipuzkoarena project and various proposals by former president Iñaki Badiola, all of which were rejected by the city council.

The transformation finally arrived through a massive reconstruction effort that began in May 2017. This project, designed by architect Izaskun Larzabal, focused on removing the running track and adding new seating rows to bring the crowd closer to the field. The financial burden of this €47 million renovation was shared among several entities: Real Sociedad contributed €33 million, the Basque Government provided €10 million, and the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council supplied €4 million. When including subsequent improvements through 2020, the total cost reached approximately €78.6 million.

The results were transformative. By the time the stadium's new configuration was fully realized in late 2019, the capacity had expanded to roughly 40,000, with a potential limit of 42,300. The first match in the new layout saw Real Sociedad defeat Atlético Madrid 2–0 with an attendance of 33,374—a club record at the time. Recognised for its 2020 World Prix Versailles win within the Sports category, this contemporary stadium was called the Reale Arena for commercial reasons until 2025.
