In short: Antarctica has no major transportation infrastructure of its own, making it a low-resource environment that relies entirely on external support. Because of this, five specific cities on the rim of the Southern Ocean act as indispensable gateways, funneling nearly all cargo and personnel to the frozen continent.

The current gateway cities—Punta Arenas, Ushuaia, Cape Town, Hobart, and Christchurch—only began establishing their roles around the turn of the 20th Century. During the 1820s, when the mainland was first discovered, expeditions departed from more northerly ports like Valparaíso and Sydney because the southern rim lacked the necessary infrastructure. It was the 'Heroic Age' of exploration, beginning with the British Southern Cross Expedition in 1898, that solidified these southern hubs as the primary supply lines. Each city serves a distinct niche in the Antarctic ecosystem. Ushuaia is the tourism powerhouse, handling 90% of all tourists to the continent, primarily via cruise ships. Conversely, the Council of Members of National Antarctic Programs maintains its base in Christchurch, which functions as a primary hub for South Korea, Italy, the United States, and New Zealand's national schemes.

Hobart, while providing the least transportation, boasts the highest number of Antarctic scientists and houses numerous policy and research organizations. In the 21st century, the concept of these cities is evolving from mere transit points to 'custodial cities.' An Australian-led project from 2017 to 2020 sought to transition these hubs into active participants in Antarctic stewardship. While cities like Shanghai are emerging as potential future gateways due to growing research roles, the current five remain deeply tied to the continent's identity, with roughly three-quarters of residents in each city viewing Antarctica as a core part of their local identity.

The shift toward stewardship reflects a growing awareness of environmental responsibility. Municipalities are now moving beyond logistics to host Antarctic festivals, K-12 education programs, and museum exhibits to foster public engagement with the continent's future.
