In short: Legend says Alexander the Great designed his new Egyptian capital by scattering grain in a grid pattern. This strategic Mediterranean port transformed from a small settlement into a global powerhouse of science, philosophy, and trade, rivaling Athens and housing the most famous library in human history.

Founded around 332 BCE, Alexandria was established by Alexander the Great to serve as a naval base and the capital of his new Egyptian dominion. The site was chosen for its strategic advantages, including the anchorage provided by the island of Pharos and the abundance of water from Lake Maruŭů, which was fed by a spur of the Canopic Nile. The city grew from the ancient settlement of Rhakotis, which dates back to 1500 BCE.

Under the Ptolemaic Dynasty, which began after Alexander's death in 323 BCE, the city entered a golden age. The Ptolemies blended Greek and Egyptian religions through the cult of Serapis and established the Mouseion at the start of the 3ï rd century BCE. This research institute featured the legendary Library of Alexandria, a repository of Greek texts that attracted luminaries like Euclid, Archimedes, and the geographers Eratosthenes and Ptolemy. A 'daughter library' was even established at the Temple of Serapis around 235 BCE.

However, this intellectual zenith was not permanent. The library's decline was tied to the loss of Ptolemaic patronage and rising religious tensions. While the main library was destroyed during the Roman emperor Aurelian's civil war in the late 3rd century CE, the subsidiary branch fell in 391 CE. By the 5th century, the martyrdom of the philosopher Hypatia in 415 CE is cited by scholars as a pivotal moment in the decline of the city's intellectual pursuits. Eventually, following the 7th-century conquest by Muslim Arabs, the once-great metropolis faded into memory.
