How a misspelled name and a missed press conference shaped a basketball legend
In short: Antawn Jamison is a Tar Heel legend, but his path wasn't always smooth. From a hospital error on his birth certificate to a youthful mistake that created a lasting rule for sports media, his journey from college superstar to NBA veteran and professor is anything but predictable.
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Jamison’s name was the result of a hospital error. His parents intended to name him "Antwan," but the misspelling "Antawn" on his birth certificate was never corrected, even though his pronunciation remained "Antoine."
His collegiate career at the University of North Carolina was nothing short of historic. In 1998, he became the national player of the year, earning both the Naismith and Wooden Awards. He was also the first player in ACC history to earn first-team honors as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. His dominance helped lead the Tar Heels to two Final Four appearances before he entered the 1998 NBA draft as the fourth overall pick.
The transition to professional sports brought both accolades and learning moments. After being traded from the Toronto Raptors to the Golden State Warriors for Vince Carter, Jamison became a two-time All-Star and won the 2004 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. He played 16 seasons in the NBA, including stints with several teams, before moving into front-office and media roles.
Beyond the court, Jamison has returned to Chapel Hill to shape the next generation. He currently co-teaches a sports communication class at UNC with his longtime friend and former public relations manager, Livis Freeman. This role allows him to share insights on the intersection of sports and media, transforming his own experiences—from a media-shy sophomore to a seasoned professional—into valuable lessons for aspiring journalists.
