In short: Armenia's military is currently undergoing a top-to-bottom transformation. While its roots stretch back to 1918, its modern structure was forged from the remnants of the Soviet Army. Today, the nation balances a heavy reliance on aging Soviet-era hardware with a push toward a more mobile, professional force.

The Armenian military's lineage is complex. Originating during the 1918 establishment of the First Republic of Armenia, its contemporary framework was built using 7th Guards Army units from the Armenian SSR's former Soviet military. This army was based in Yerevan from 1946 until its disbandment in the summer of 1992. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Armenia established its own Ministry of Defence on January 28, 1992, and began creating its own unique military units, such as the 1st Airborne Regiment.

The transition to a modern force has been marked by significant challenges. Despite receiving newer equipment from Russia, many lower-readiness units still rely on Soviet-legacy systems. These older systems impose heavy demands on logistics for maintenance and replacement parts, impacting overall readiness. Consequently, the ground force is currently re-evaluating its structure to maintain traditional mechanized capabilities while developing lighter, more mobile, and self-sustainable formations capable of operating in rugged, mountainous terrain.

Armenia's military identity is also defined by its international commitments and domestic policies. Armenia joined the Collective Security Treaty Organization in 2002 and, in 1992, approved the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe to restrict heavy weaponry types. While the military is constitutionally a conscript force, there is a growing number of professional officers. In 2017, the force consisted of roughly 19,000 conscripts and 23,000 professionals, with the government now emphasizing a 'new ideology' focused on defending internationally recognized sovereign territory.
