In short: The Art Gallery of Ontario is more than a museum; it is a sprawling architectural dialogue between history and modernity. From its 1817 Georgian roots to its massive contemporary expansions, the site serves as a physical record of how a city preserves its past while making room for the future.

The museum's physical identity is anchored by The Grange, a historic 1817 Georgian manor. Bequeathed to the institution by Harriet Boulton Smith in 1909, the manor is one of Toronto's oldest surviving structures. While it originally served as a private residence, the gallery underwent a complex evolution of use. After the manor was restored to its 1830s configuration in the late 1960s, it was repurposed as a historic house before eventually becoming an exhibition space and members' lounge.

To accommodate a growing collection, the gallery expanded outward from this historic core. Early 20th-century growth was guided by Darling and Pearson, who designed a Beaux-Arts style complex intended to mirror the Royal Ontario Museum. These early expansions included a sculpture court and several galleries, some of which were financed by the department store chain Eaton's.

However, the museum's growth was often dictated by the constraints of its site; because of The Grange's historic value, architects had to limit construction along the southern portions of the property. Modernity arrived in distinct waves, most notably with the 1993 expansion by KPMB Architects and the 2004 'Transformation AGO' project by Frank Gehry. The latter was a controversial CA$276 million redevelopment that sparked debates over donor recognition and architectural style. Today, the complex spans 45,000 square metres, housing over 120,000 works. It continues to evolve, with current plans for a five-floor contemporary gallery that will connect to the existing complex at four points, marking its seventh major expansion.
