In short: Asking Alexandria didn't start in the UK. It began in the United Arab Emirates with a different name and a different lineup. After a move fueled by homesickness, the group underwent a total transformation, eventually becoming a staple of the global metalcore scene.

The origins of Asking Alexandria are rooted in 2003, when guitarist Ben Bruce founded a group called Amongst Us while living in Dubai. The project underwent several identity shifts, first becoming End of Reason before finally settling on Asking Alexandria in 2006. During this early period, the band released the EP Tomorrow. Hope. Goodbye and the self-released album The Irony of Your Perfection.

The band's trajectory changed significantly in 2006 when Bruce, then 17, returned to Nottingham due to homesickness. While some Emirati musicians initially accompanied him, Bruce eventually formed an entirely new lineup with local members in York. This transition included the recruitment of lead vocalist Danny Worsnop, with whom Bruce became so close he invited him to move into his flat. Bruce later clarified that while he kept the name for convenience, the new lineup constituted a completely different entity.

The group's commercial breakthrough arrived in 2009 with their debut album Stand Up and Scream. While it initially saw modest success, it paved the way for a prolific touring schedule and high-profile support slots for acts like Avenged Sevenfold and Korn. By 2013, the band reached a commercial peak with From Death to Destiny, which debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200 and became their highest-charting release to date.

The band's history is also marked by physical and stylistic evolution. In late 2012, Worsnop sustained a torn vocal cord, an injury that required a period of rest but did not halt the release of their third album. Stylistically, the group has moved from their early metalcore roots to a more melodic hard rock sound, notably shifting genres with their 2017 self-titled album and subsequent releases.
