In short: In 2008, a newly promoted side from the city of Tripoli achieved the unthinkable. They didn't just compete in the Greek top flight; they dismantled the nation's biggest giants, earning a nickname that linked them to one of the world's most famous football icons.

Asteras Tripolis, based in the Peloponnese, experienced a turbulent journey to the top. Founded in 1931, the club faced multiple dissolutions due to war and administrative shifts. It wasn't until the late 20th century that it began its modern ascent. Under the leadership of Dimitris Bakos and Giannis Kaimenakis, the club embarked on a historic streak, remaining unbeaten at home for over five years between 2001 and 2006. This momentum propelled them through four divisions to reach the Super League Greece in 2007.

Their debut season was nothing short of spectacular. Under manager Paulo Campos, the 'Arcadians' became the first and only newly promoted team to defeat the 'Big Four'—Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, PAOK, and AEK Athens—all in their first appearance in the top division. Their success was bolstered by a core of Argentinean players, leading Greek fans to affectionately dub them 'Boca' due to their shared colors and the high-quality football they produced.

The club's trajectory continued with significant milestones, including a first-ever Greek Cup final in 2013 and a historic run to the UEFA Europa League group stages in 2014–15. During that campaign, they competed against heavyweights like Tottenham Hotspur and Beşiktaş. Despite enduring various difficulties and threats of demotion, the team stays a landmark of local dignity, rooted in its heritage and ties to Theodoros Kolokotronis, the Greek War of Independence protagonist.
