How a documentary filmmaker became the first NDP leader without prior elected experience
In short: Avi Lewis, a veteran broadcaster and activist, ascended to the leadership of Canada's New Democratic Party in 2026. Despite never holding a seat in the House of Commons, he secured the top post on his first attempt, promising a radical shift toward a Canadian Green New Deal and public ownership.
Born in 1967 into a prominent political family, Avi Lewis spent decades in the public eye as a journalist and filmmaker. His career included hosting roles at CBC and Al Jazeera, alongside directing documentaries like The Take and This Changes Everything with his wife, Naomi Klein. His political roots run deep; he is the great-grandson of Morris Lewis, a Polish-Jewish activist who fled to Canada in 1921, and the grandson of David Lewis, who led the federal NDP from 1971 to 1975.
Lewis first gained national political attention in 2015 by co-launching the Leap Manifesto, a policy framework that sought to address climate change alongside wealth inequality and systemic racism. Although he ran unsuccessfully for Parliament in 2021 and 2025, his influence within the party grew. By the time he launched his 2026 leadership bid, he had secured significant support from progressive figures, raising over $1.2 million from more than 10,000 individual donors.
His victory at the March 2026 convention in Winnipeg was decisive, with over 56% of the membership backing his platform on the initial ballot. His agenda is ambitious, proposing a wealth tax on the top 1%, the construction of one million public housing units, and the creation of public options for essential services like groceries and pharmaceuticals. However, his leadership has already faced friction from provincial party counterparts, particularly in Alberta and Saskatchewan, where leaders have publicly challenged his stance on fossil fuel development.
Notably, Lewis has opted not to seek a parliamentary seat in the immediate aftermath of his election, declining to run in 2026 by-elections. This unconventional approach marks a departure from traditional party leadership, as he remains the first NDP leader to assume the role without having previously served as an elected official. His tenure represents a clear pivot toward a more ideological, activist-led direction for the party.
