A Canadian politician’s rapid political rise and controversial descent into fringe activism
In short: Dallas Brodie, a lawyer and former Conservative MLA, transformed from a mainstream political candidate into a polarizing figure known for residential school denialism. After being expelled from her party caucus, she formed the OneBC party, only to face internal leadership struggles, recall campaigns, and widespread condemnation for her provocative public rhetoric.
Born in 1962, Dallas Brodie built a diverse professional background as a lawyer, arbitrator, and broadcaster before entering politics. She earned degrees from Princeton and the University of Toronto, later working in media roles at the CBC and CKNW. Her political career began in earnest during the 2024 provincial election, where she secured a seat in Vancouver-Quilchena as a Conservative. However, her tenure was quickly marked by friction. During the campaign, she drew sharp rebukes from Indigenous leaders for comments regarding First Nations autonomy and social issues, though she maintained her party's support at the time.
The turning point for Brodie’s political standing occurred in early 2025, when she began publicly questioning the existence of unmarked graves at former residential school sites. These statements, which contradicted established findings, led to her expulsion from the Conservative caucus in March 2025. Party leader John Rustad cited her use of her platform to mock abuse survivors as the primary reason for her removal. Undeterred, Brodie co-founded the OneBC party, which continued to produce content challenging the historical record of Indigenous genocide in Canada and advocating for the repeal of Indigenous rights legislation.
Brodie’s leadership of OneBC proved volatile. In December 2025, she was briefly removed by her own board of directors, who cited erratic behavior and security breaches, only to regain control weeks later after the board resigned. Beyond internal party strife, she faced significant public opposition, including a formal recall campaign in 2026. While the effort failed to gather the 15,232 signatures required to trigger a by-election, it highlighted the intense division surrounding her actions. Throughout this period, Brodie also engaged in high-profile confrontations, including unauthorized protests at university campuses that required police intervention, further cementing her status as a lightning rod for national debate.
