How one man challenged the rigid caste hierarchy of nineteenth-century Travancore, India
In short: Born into a community of bonded laborers, Ayyankali transformed the social landscape of Kerala. By defying restrictive caste conventions through public protest, education advocacy, and labor strikes, he dismantled centuries of systemic oppression. Known as the King of Pulaya, his relentless activism reshaped the rights of the marginalized.
Born in 1863 in the princely state of Travancore, Ayyankali belonged to the Pulayar community, a group subjected to severe discrimination. During this era, the region was characterized by extreme social stratification, with Pulayars often serving as bonded laborers for landowning castes like the Nairs. They were denied basic rights, including land ownership and access to temples, in a society that enforced rigid, oppressive hierarchies.
Ayyankali’s path to activism began with small acts of defiance, such as riding a bullock cart on restricted public roads in 1893. These protests, which Nisar and Kanadasamy described as laying claim to public space, sparked a movement that challenged the status quo. His influence grew through his leadership in the Sadhu Jana Paripalana Sangham, an organization founded in 1907 to advocate for the rights of the poor, particularly regarding access to education.
The struggle for equality often turned violent. When Ayyankali attempted to enroll a Pulayar girl in a government school, the backlash included the burning of a school building in Ooruttambalam. In response, Ayyankali organized a strike of agricultural laborers—a historic first for the region—withdrawing labor from paddy fields until the government removed caste-based educational restrictions. He also championed the right of Pulayar women to cover their upper bodies, a practice previously prohibited to enforce social distinction.
Ayyankali’s legacy as the Kerala Spartacus remains significant. Beyond his grassroots organizing, he served in the Sree Moolam Popular Assembly, influencing the socio-political structure of modern Kerala. His work, which drew inspiration from figures like Ayyavu Swamikal and Narayana Guru, fundamentally altered the lives of Dalits. Today, he is remembered as a pivotal leader whose efforts to secure dignity and education laid the groundwork for social reform.
