In short: Founded to represent the Vanniyar community, the Pattali Makkal Katchi has navigated a volatile path from intense reservation protests to becoming a key player in Indian coalition politics. The party often uses direct action to secure its community's interests, having successfully fought for specific caste-based reservation entitlements in Tamil Nadu.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) emerged from the 1987 Vanniyar reservation agitation, organized by the Vanniyar Sangam. This movement sought Most Backward Caste (MBC) status for the Vanniyar community in northern Tamil Nadu. The protests were intense; at their peak, the state was paralyzed for a week as thousands of trees were felled, highways were blocked, and over 1,400 Dalit houses were torched. The unrest resulted in 21 protestors being shot by police.

The political impact of these protests was realized in 1989 when the DMK government, led by M. Karunanidhi, granted MBC status and reservation entitlements in education and employment to the Vanniyars. This success paved the way for Dr. S. Ramadoss to formally found the PMK on 16 July 1989. Since then, the party has defied traditional Dravidian political culture by explicitly appealing to caste identification to garner support.

The PMK's influence has often been felt through its role in national coalitions. In 2004, the party joined the United Progressive Alliance (UPA-I), helping to form the central government. However, the party has also faced significant controversy. In 2013, following inflammatory speeches by Dr. Ramadoss and his son, Anbumani Ramadoss, the party was linked to violence causing an estimated ₹600 crores in property damage. More recently, the party has navigated internal leadership disputes, including a splinter faction formed by Dr. S. Ramadoss that reunited with the main party in 2026.

The party's relationship with state leadership remains a central theme. In 2021, the AIADMK government passed a bill for a 10.5% internal reservation for Vanniyars to appease the PMK, a move later implemented by the DMK government in July 2021.
