The legendary St. Bernard who saved forty lives in the Swiss Alps
In short: Long before helicopters dominated mountain rescues, a single dog became a global icon of heroism. Barry, a St. Bernard living at a high-altitude hospice, gained a reputation so enduring that his breed was named after him for decades. His story transformed a working breed into a symbol of salvation.
Born roughly 221 years ago, Barry lived at the Great St. Bernard Pass, a hospice located about 8,100 feet above sea level. Established by monks in the 11th century to protect travelers between Italy and Switzerland, the hospice saw dogs used as guards starting in the 17th century. By the 18th century, these dogs were assisting travelers by packing down snow on mountain paths and locating travelers lost in snowbanks.
While no written records exist to confirm the specifics, legend credits Barry with saving approximately 40 people stranded in the Alps. His success was likely aided by an outstanding sense of smell. Barry spent 12 years at the hospice before a servant moved him to the Swiss capital of Bern, where he died in 1814. His fame was so immense that the breed was referred to as 'Barry Dogs' for many years.
The legacy of this dog persists through the Barry Foundation in Martigny-Ville, Switzerland. To honor him, the foundation continues the monks' tradition of naming one puppy every year 'Barry' and training them as therapy dogs. While modern rescuers now rely on helicopters rather than dogs for Alpine emergencies, Barry remains a cultural icon, appearing in films like Walt Disney's 1977 production and various books.
Interestingly, the name 'St. Bernard' for the breed did not become common until the late 19th century. This was after breeders began crossbreeding the dogs to increase their bulk and the size of their heads.
