In short: Known as the Cheese Dog for its historical role hauling dairy carts, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a powerhouse of the Swiss Alps. While celebrated for its calm temperament and striking tri-coloured coat, this large breed carries a complex genetic legacy that demands careful attention from owners and breeders alike.

Originating from the canton of Bern, the Bernese Mountain Dog is one of four Sennenhund-type breeds, with roots tracing back to Roman mastiffs. Historically, these dogs served as all-purpose farm workers, guarding property and driving dairy cattle across long distances. Their strength made them ideal for transporting carts of milk and cheese, earning them the local nickname Cheese Dogs. By the early 1900s, breeders in the Burgdorf region began formalizing the breed, and it was officially recognized in 1912.

Physically, the breed is distinguished by its heavy build and long, tri-coloured coat. Males typically stand 64–70 cm at the withers, while females range from 58–66 cm. Beyond their aesthetic, they possess a calm, attentive nature, making them excellent family companions. Their versatility extends to modern activities, including carting competitions and herding trials, which they became eligible to compete in through the American Kennel Club in 2010.

Despite their popularity, the breed faces significant health challenges. Studies consistently show a lower life expectancy compared to other dogs of similar size, with recent findings ranging from 8 to 10.1 years. The breed has a high frequency of neoplasia, with one study attributing 55% of deaths to cancer. Furthermore, they are prone to conditions like elbow dysplasia, immune-mediated glomerulonephritis, and histiocytosis. Researchers have identified specific genetic mutations, such as those in the CDKN2A/B and PTEN genes, that may contribute to these risks, highlighting the importance of ongoing health monitoring for the breed.
