In short: By the dawn of the 15th century, the Ottoman state had transformed from a minor beylik into a formidable regional power. Yet, its rapid expansion across Anatolia and the Balkans placed Sultan Bayezid I on a direct collision course with Timur, a conqueror whose ambitions would culminate at the Battle of Ankara.

The rise of the Ottoman state was a century-long process of consolidation. Starting under Osman I, the beylik initially focused on territorial gains against the Byzantine Empire, marked by early engagements like Bapheus and Dimbos in 1302. By the time of the siege of Prusa, which lasted from 1317 to 1326, the Ottomans had established themselves as a significant power in the region. This momentum continued through the 14th century as they expanded into the Balkans, clashing with the Serbian and Bulgarian Empires at battles such as Maritsa in 1371.

Under the leadership of Murad I, the Ottomans faced the Balkan alliance at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. Following this, Bayezid I ascended to power, further extending Ottoman influence. His campaigns in Anatolia, notably the 1391 Battle of Kirdilim against Kadi Burhaneddin, allowed the Ottomans to claim the title of the Seljuks. Despite a setback at the Battle of Rovine in 1395 against Mircea the Elder, the Ottomans remained a dominant force, successfully defeating a major crusade at Nicopolis in 1396.

Following the victory at Nicopolis, Bayezid I effectively blockaded Constantinople, forcing Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos to seek aid from Western Europe, albeit unsuccessfully. However, the Ottoman expansion into eastern Anatolia brought Bayezid into direct conflict with Timur. This geopolitical tension reached its breaking point in 1402 at the Battle of Ankara. This confrontation represented the culmination of years of Ottoman territorial growth and the emergence of a rival conqueror, setting the stage for one of the most significant military encounters of the era.
