The reality show where a leader could be evicted in a single week
In short: In 2014, Big Brother 16 introduced a high-stakes mechanical shift: the 'Battle of the Block.' For the first time, the Head of Household—traditionally the safest person in the house—could be dethroned and potentially evicted within the same week. It turned the game of social strategy into a volatile power struggle.
The sixteenth season of the American reality series premiered on June 25, 2014. While the core premise of sequestered HouseGuests remained, the season introduced a dual-Head of Household (HoH) twist. This meant that for a significant portion of the game, two different individuals held power simultaneously, each nominating two people for a total of four nominees on the block.
To manage this, the show debuted the 'Battle of the Block.' In this competition, the four nominees competed as duos. The winning pair was granted safety, while the HoH who had nominated them was stripped of their power and became eligible to be replaced as a nominee. This was a radical departure from previous seasons, as it created a mechanism where the person in charge could lose their status and face eviction in a single week.
The twist was eventually retired after Week 8. The season also featured 'Team America,' a secret alliance of three HouseGuests—Joey, Donny, Derrick, and Frankie—chosen by public vote to perform secret missions for cash. Ultimately, Derrick Levasseur won the season, securing a total of $575,000, which included a $50,000 bonus for his role in Team America and $5,000 from a specific competition.
The season concluded on September 24, 2014, after 97 days of competition. Derrick defeated Cody Calafiore in a 7–2 jury vote to win the title, while Donny Thompson was crowned 'America's Favorite HouseGuest.' The season remains a notable point in the franchise's history for its aggressive restructuring of power dynamics.
