The reality of 99 days under constant surveillance
In short: Imagine living in a custom house where every move is recorded 24 hours a day, with zero contact with the outside world. For sixteen competitors, this was the high-stakes reality of Big Brother 20—a technology-themed social experiment where privacy was traded for a chance at half a million dollars.
Premiering on June 27, 2018, and concluding on September 26, 2018, Big Brother 20 centered on a technology theme. This included unique mechanics like 'Power Apps' and 'Crap Apps,' which were awarded based on viewer sentiment during the first three weeks. A major twist called the 'H@cker Competition' debuted on Day 44, allowing one anonymous winner to manipulate nominations, veto selections, and even nullify votes at live evictions. The show's production also included a private Diary Room for personal reflections. A two-season agreement led to the show's extension during August 2016.
The game structure relied on a complex hierarchy of power. Each week began with a Head of Household (HoH) competition; the winner gained immunity and nominated two others for eviction. The Power of Veto (PoV) then allowed players to potentially save a nominee, forcing the HoH to name a replacement. After 99 days, Kaycee Clark emerged as the winner in a narrow 5–4 vote over Tyler Crispen, who was also crowned 'America's Favorite HouseGuest.' The final nine evicted players formed a Jury to decide the ultimate winner. These sequestered individuals were only permitted to see ceremonies and competitions involving all remaining guests.
The season was marked by significant controversy regarding contestant behavior and conduct. HouseGuest JC Mounduix faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and used derogatory language, while others were criticized for insensitive remarks regarding religion and skin tone. Despite these tensions and an uncertain future for the franchise, the season maintained positive viewing figures and paved the way for a new era of the series. Host Julie Chen Moonves returned for this season alongside executive producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan. Furthermore, some contestants later appeared on other shows like The Challenge or Love Island.
