The radioactive ghost fleet left behind by the Cold War
In July 1946, the United States detonated two atomic bombs at Bikini Atoll. This video explores the aftermath of Operation Crossroads, where a massive fleet of 84 decommissioned warships was intentionally sunk, leaving a permanent mark on the Marshall Islands.
During the early Cold War, the US government conducted the first of 23 nuclear tests at this remote Pacific atoll, located between Hawaii and the Philippines. Known as Operation Crossroads, the mission aimed to demonstrate destructive power and signal strength to the Soviet Union.
The explosions sank 84 vessels, creating a graveyard of ships that remains radioactive. The environmental impact was profound, leaving parts of the atoll permanently contaminated and forcing the local islanders to depend on imported food to this day.
