How a teenager's obsession with tic-tac-toe built a software empire

In short: Before he was the world’s richest man, Bill Gates was a high schooler sneaking out of his bedroom window at night to write code. His journey from a self-taught hobbyist to the kingmaker of the PC revolution reveals how early obsession can reshape global infrastructure.

Gates's path to tech leadership began with raw, solitary persistence. At age 13, he wrote his first program—a game of tic-tac-toe—which he described as a 'triumph' because it proved a machine could execute logic. This early fascination led him to form a high school programming group that computerized a local payroll system and launched Traf-O-Data, a company selling traffic-counting systems to governments.

While attending Harvard University as a sophomore in 1975, Gates joined forces with childhood friend Paul Allen. They initially focused on adapting BASIC, a language for large computers, for use on microcomputers. This project was so successful that Gates left Harvard during his junior year to establish Microsoft on April 4, 1975. The company name itself was a portmanteau of 'micro-computer' and 'software.'

The turning point for Microsoft’s dominance came through a strategic licensing deal with IBM. By providing the operating system (MS-DOS) for the first IBM PC in 1981, Gates established a technical standard that pushed out competitors. He skillfully maneuvered to make IBM dependent on his software, eventually becoming the 'ultimate kingmaker' as makers of IBM-compatible clones also turned to him for basic software.

By 1986, Gates became a paper billionaire, and by the early 1990s, he had amassed a fortune that made him one of the world’s richest private individuals. He eventually stepped down as CEO in 2000 to focus on philanthropy through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, leaving behind a legacy defined by both aggressive business tactics and massive technological influence.
