How a first-round draft pick became a dual-league Cy Young champion
In short: From a $684,000 signing bonus to a $182 million contract, Blake Snell's trajectory is a masterclass in elite performance. He is one of only seven pitchers in MLB history to win a Cy Young Award in both the American and National Leagues.
Blake Snell's ascent began in 2011 when the Tampa Bay Rays selected him in the first round. After a prolific high school career in Washington, where he posted a 1.00 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 63 innings, Snell climbed the minor league ranks. His breakthrough came in 2018, a season defined by dominance. He led the American League in wins (21) and earned run average (1.89), earning his first Cy Young Award and becoming the youngest pitcher to win the AL Pitcher of the Month award in consecutive months since 2004.
The path to greatness was not without friction. In 2017, Snell struggled with efficiency, often reaching 100 pitches by the fourth inning, which led to a temporary demotion. He also faced public scrutiny during the 2020 pandemic after expressing concerns regarding pay versus health. However, his statistical ceiling remained unmatched; in 2018, his 219 ERA+ and 88.0% left-on-base percentage highlighted a rare ability to suppress even the most dangerous hitters.
Snell proved his versatility by conquering the National League. Following a trade to the San Diego Padres, he secured his second Cy Young Award in 2023, receiving 28 of 30 first-place votes. His career has been a series of high-stakes transitions, from a $50 million deal with the Rays in 2019 to a massive five-year, $182 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in late 2024. In 2025, he reached the pinnacle of the sport, contributing to the Dodgers' World Series championship victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
