Boca Raton: From a failed 1920s resort dream to a global tech powerhouse
In short: Once a struggling farming town, Boca Raton was transformed by architect Addison Mizner into an ambitious, Mediterranean-inspired resort. While his grand vision largely collapsed during the 1920s land bust, the city later reinvented itself as the unlikely birthplace of the IBM personal computer, forever altering the trajectory of modern technology.
In 1920, Boca Raton was a quiet farming community of just 100 people. Architect Addison Mizner arrived with a grand vision to create an exclusive social capital, incorporating the city in 1924. He planned a sprawling resort featuring a 20-lane highway called El Camino Real, inspired by his own imaginative, often fabricated, tales of foreign lands. However, the 1926 Miami hurricane and the end of the Florida land boom forced the Mizner Development Corporation into bankruptcy by 1927, leaving only fragments of his vision, such as the Cloister Inn, now the Ritz-Carlton.
The city's identity shifted dramatically in the late 1960s when IBM began secret land acquisitions. By 1970, the company dedicated a massive manufacturing and office complex designed by Marcel Breuer. This facility became the epicenter of IBM's personal computing revolution in the 1980s. At its peak in 1984, IBM employed 8,500 people in the city, cementing Boca Raton's status as a significant hub in the evolution of the digital computer industry.
Today, Boca Raton balances its historical legacy with modern luxury. The city is known for its strict development codes that limit signage and billboards, preserving green spaces. It remains an affluent enclave, home to several of the most expensive gated communities in the United States, including the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club. While the original resort dream failed, the city successfully transitioned into a center for higher education, corporate headquarters, and high-end residential living, maintaining a population of 97,422 as of the 2020 census.
