In short: Developed by George Merrick during the 1920s, Coral Gables was designed as a meticulously planned community. With its strict zoning and Mediterranean Revival architecture, the city sought to bring the aesthetic of European castles to Florida, eventually earning international recognition for its commitment to Spanish culture and historic preservation.

Coral Gables was formally incorporated in April 1925, emerging from the vision of real estate developer George Merrick. Drawing inspiration from the City Beautiful Movement, Merrick aimed to construct what he described as castles in Spain. The city’s distinct character was defined by its strict zoning and a mandate for Mediterranean Revival architecture, which emphasized Spanish influences. This commitment to a specific aesthetic was so profound that King Alfonso XIII of Spain recognized Merrick for his efforts in promoting Spanish culture within the community.

The city's construction relied heavily on the expertise of Bahamian immigrant laborers, who were skilled in working with local Miami Limestone, often called coral rock. This material, along with coral-colored tile, gave the city its name and unique look. By 1926, the development had already generated $150 million in sales. Beyond the primary Spanish theme, Merrick expanded the city's architectural diversity through themed villages that incorporated Italian, French, and Dutch South African styles.

Today, the city remains a hub of activity, anchored by the University of Miami, which has been the largest employer since the city's founding. The local government has prioritized maintaining this historic character since passing its first preservation ordinance in 1973. Through the Historical Resources and Cultural Arts Department and a quasijudicial Historic Preservation Board, the city continues to identify and protect landmarks, ensuring that the original vision of a planned, Mediterranean-themed community survives amidst modern growth.
