How a quiet Austrian border town spent decades wrestling with a dark legacy
In short: Braunau am Inn is a historic trading hub on the Bavarian border, known for its Gothic architecture and salt trade heritage. Yet, for nearly a century, the town has grappled with the burden of being the birthplace of Adolf Hitler, navigating complex efforts to prevent the site from becoming a pilgrimage.
Founded in the 12th century, Braunau am Inn evolved from a strategic fortress and salt-trading junction into a vibrant Austrian municipality. Its history is marked by shifting borders and conflicts, including the War of the Spanish Succession and the Napoleonic era, before finally settling as part of Austria in 1816. Today, the town is a center for industry, education, and community, hosting innovative technical schools and local athletic traditions.
The town’s most difficult challenge remains the house at Salzburger Vorstadt 15, where Adolf Hitler was born in 1889. After the Nazi Party acquired the building in 1938, it became a cult center, leading to decades of controversy regarding its use. Post-war, the building served various roles, from a library to a day-care center, while the Austrian government sought to neutralize its potential as a neo-Nazi destination. In 1989, a memorial stone made of Mauthausen granite was installed to honor victims of fascism.
The struggle over the property culminated in a 2016 law allowing the state to compulsorily purchase the building for €812,000. Following years of debate over whether to demolish or repurpose the site, the government opted for a radical architectural transformation to strip away its recognizable features. By July 2026, the building opened as a police station and training center, a move intended to permanently decouple the structure from its historical associations and ensure it serves a civic, rather than symbolic, function.
