How a 42nd overall pick became an NBA champion
In short: In the high-stakes world of professional basketball, most stars are minted in the first round. Yet, Bruce Brown, a second-round selection, defied the odds to become a pivotal engine for the Denver Nuggets' historic championship run.
Bruce Brown's journey to the NBA summit began far from the spotlight of top-tier draft picks. A standout recruit from Massachusetts and Vermont, Brown entered the 2018 NBA draft as the 42nd overall selection by the Detroit Pistons. While his collegiate career at the Miami Hurricanes was interrupted by a foot injury requiring surgery, his versatility as a player—capable of guarding both guard and small forward positions—made him a valuable asset for various franchises.
Brown's career has been defined by high-impact performances in critical moments. During the Denver Nuggets' 2023 championship campaign, he served as a vital bench contributor. His ability to elevate his game under pressure was evident in the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat. In Game 4, he scored 21 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, and in the decisive Game 5, he scored the winning layup with just over 90 seconds remaining, helping Denver end a 47-year championship drought.
Since his championship victory, Brown has navigated a nomadic path through the league, playing for the Brooklyn Nets, Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors, and New Orleans Pelicans. His time in Indiana saw him become the team's highest-paid player for the 2023–24 season, while his stints in Toronto and New Orleans involved significant trades involving future draft picks. Following a second stint with the Nuggets in 2025, Brown eventually signed with the New York Knicks in September 2026.
