In short: In the summer of 1846, a group of American immigrants seized Sonoma, declared independence from Mexico, and raised a flag featuring a grizzly bear. This unrecognized state, the Bear Flag Republic, lasted only weeks before being absorbed into the United States.

The Bear Flag Revolt was born from a volatile mix of land disputes and geopolitical tension. By 1845, the Mexican government, wary of the growing influx of Americans into Alta California, issued orders denying entry to certain U.S. immigrants and prohibiting the sale or rental of land to non-citizens. Many of the 33 American immigrants who led the rebellion had entered without official permission and faced the threat of expulsion. This resentment was compounded by the presence of U. and Mexican military interests during the outbreak of the Mexican-American War.

Rather than being a random riot, the revolt received secret backing from the U.S. Army Brevet Captain John C. Frémont. While Frémont’s role is debated—historian H. H. Bancroft suggests he 'instigated and planned' the horse raids and incited settlers—the rebels certainly utilized his influence. On June 14, 1846, over 30 insurgents arrived at the Sonoma Barracks. They took Lieutenant Colonel Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo and other officers hostage, effectively seizing control of the area north of San Francisco.

The movement, originally called the 'Popular Movement,' adopted the name 'California Republic' only on its flag. The insurgents elected military officers, such as First Lieutenant Henry L. Ford, but failed to establish any civil government structure. The republic's existence was short-lived. By July 5, 1846, the rebel forces, numbering between 100 and 200 men, were absorbed into the California Battalion under Frémont. The republic's formal end occurred on July 9, as U.S. Navy Lieutenant Joseph Revere hoisted the American colours above the Sonoma Barracks.
