How a Mexican mission town became the birthplace of a short-lived California republic
In short: Sonoma began as a strategic outpost to deter Russian expansion, but its identity shifted rapidly. In 1846, American rebels seized the town, sparking the Bear Flag Revolt and briefly establishing the California Republic. Today, this historic hub remains a central figure in the region's cultural and viticultural landscape.
Founded in 1823 by Padre José Altimira under Governor Luis Antonio Argüello, Mission San Francisco Solano was the final mission built in California. Its primary purpose was to fortify the region against Russian encroachment from the north. By 1833, the Mexican government initiated secularization, and Governor José Figueroa appointed Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo to oversee the mission's transition into a civilian pueblo. In 1835, Vallejo laid out the town's grid, establishing the plaza and streets that still define the city center.
The town's trajectory changed dramatically on June 14, 1846, when thirty-three American insurgents captured the Sonoma Barracks. They took General Vallejo prisoner and declared the birth of the California Republic. This uprising, known as the Bear Flag Revolt, ended on July 9, 1846, when U.S. Navy Lieutenant Joseph Warren Revere raised the American flag. The subsequent American Conquest and the Gold Rush brought a wave of new settlers, leading to decades of complex land disputes as ownership titles were contested under shifting legal regimes.
Sonoma was incorporated in 1883 and served as the first county seat for Sonoma County until 1854, when the seat moved to Santa Rosa. While the town's political status evolved, its geography remained a constant. Situated in the Sonoma Valley, the city is shielded by the Mayacamas and Sonoma Mountains. Today, with a population of 10,739 as of the 2020 census, the city balances its rich history with its role as a premier destination in California's Wine Country.
