The man who sank the Titanic lived a life of triumph and tragedy

Captain Edward Smith — The Untold Life of the "Millionaire's Captain" · 24:29 · Video: Epic Builds Hub · Watch at the source

In short: Captain Edward Smith's story is more than the Titanic disaster. This video reveals his rise from apprentice to 'Millionaire's Captain,' his survival of a Royal Navy collision, and the six ice warnings that may have saved lives — but only if they had reached him.

Captain Edward Smith's career spanned four and a half decades, during which he never lost a single ship. From his beginnings as a seventeen-year-old apprentice in a pottery town within England, he ascended to become the most desired leader in the White Star Line. His salary in 1912 was worth about $200,000 a year in today's money, reflecting his status as a trusted and experienced mariner.

Even though he was well-known, Smith endured an actual crash with a Royal Navy vessel just seven months prior to the Titanic incident. On the night of April 14th, 1912, he received six separate ice warnings, responding to some of them. However, the one warning that might have changed the course of history never reached him at all. The full story includes his widow's efforts to defend his name and the unresolved questions surrounding the final warning.
