From Confederate guerrilla to outlaw: the transformation of Cole Younger
In short: Cole Younger didn't just become a bandit; he was forged in the fires of the American Civil War. After his father was killed by Union forces, he joined a notorious guerrilla unit, transitioning from a soldier of revenge to one of the most wanted outlaws in American history.
Born in 1844 in Missouri, Cole Younger was the seventh of fourteen children. His life shifted violently during the Civil War when his father, a Union supporter, was shot dead by a soldier from Kansas. Seeking retribution, Younger joined William Clarke Quantrill’s 'bushwhackers'—pro-Confederate partisans known for savage guerrilla warfare. One of his most notable actions with Quantrill was a retaliatory raid on Lawrence, Kansas, in August 1863, where approximately 200 citizens were killed and the town was looted and burned.
Following the war, many bushwhackers returned to civilian life, but a core group remained active. After joining a group headed by Archie Clement, Younger took part in the initial armed bank heist during peacetime in the U.S. this occurred in 1866. By 1868, the Younger brothers—Cole, Jim, and Bob—became the core of a notorious gang alongside Frank and Jesse James. They targeted banks, stagecoaches, and even trains, notably derailing a locomotive in Adair, Iowa, in 1873.
The gang's notoriety peaked with the failed 1876 robbery of a bank in Northfield, Minnesota. Younger specifically targeted the bank due to its ties to Radical politicians. After a deadly shootout, the brothers were captured and sentenced to life in the Minnesota Territorial Prison. While in prison, Younger worked as a librarian and printer's devil. After being paroled in 1901, he spent his final years touring as a performer and eventually declared his repentance, becoming a Christian in 1913 before his death in 1916.
