The cavalry's struggle to survive the arrival of modern industrial warfare

Cavalry in WW1 - Between Tradition and Machine Gun Fire I THE GREAT WAR Special · 8:10 · Video: The Great War · Watch at the source

In short: For centuries, the cavalry charge was the ultimate expression of battlefield dominance. But as the First World War dawned, riders in bright uniforms and polished breastplates faced a terrifying new reality. The era of the sabre was colliding with the era of the machine gun, forcing a desperate redefinition of cavalry warfare.

At the outbreak of the Great War, the image of the cavalry was deeply rooted in tradition. Soldiers often appeared in brightly coloured uniforms, carrying sabres and wearing polished breastplates. This style of warfare, which emphasised mobility and the psychological impact of a mounted charge, had been a cornerstone of military doctrine for generations.

However, the technological landscape of 1914 had shifted fundamentally. The battlefield was no longer an open space for sweeping maneuvers; it had become a lethal environment defined by industrial-scale destruction. The emergence of high-capacity machine guns, heavy artillery, and the widespread use of barbed wire created a landscape that was nearly impassable for horses.

These new defensive technologies effectively neutralized the traditional shock tactics of mounted troops. A charge that might have succeeded in a previous era was now met with concentrated, rapid-fire weaponry and obstacles that could trap and decimate a formation before it ever reached the enemy lines. This forced military commanders to rethink the very purpose of cavalry units.

The conflict necessitated a total redefinition of the cavalry's role. No longer able to rely solely on the charge, these units had to adapt to a war of attrition and static positions. The transition from the romanticism of the sabre to the grim reality of modern, mechanized combat remains one of the most striking examples of the break between traditional military identity and the brutal efficiency of modern warfare.
