In short: Known as the First Team, the 1st Cavalry Division is one of the most decorated units in the United States Army. Throughout its century-long history, it has undergone radical transformations, serving as a cavalry, infantry, air assault, and armored division, while maintaining a ceremonial horse detachment to honor its origins.

Established in 1921, the 1st Cavalry Division was originally organized as a square division with 7,463 personnel. Its early years were defined by experimentation and financial constraints, which often hindered the ability to conduct annual maneuvers. By 1928, Major General Herbert B. Crosby initiated reorganizations to reduce overhead while attempting to maintain or increase firepower. These efforts included shifting machine gun units from brigades to regiments, a structure that mirrored infantry practices of the time.

Throughout the 1930s, the division served as a laboratory for testing equipment and organizational structures for a motorized and mechanized army. In 1938, the division evaluated a smaller triangular configuration at Toyahvale, Texas, but a board of officers led by Brigadier General Kenyon A. Joyce ultimately recommended retaining the two-brigade, four-regiment structure. This configuration was favored for its ability to deploy easily in two columns, which was considered standard cavalry tactic. Despite this, the division underwent continuous adjustments, with its strength rising to 10,680 by late 1938.

The onset of World War II accelerated the division's transition. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the military sought to refine its divisions based on lessons from large-scale maneuvers. By 1942, the division saw significant changes, including the loss of its anti-tank troop and the redistribution of weapons directly into cavalry troops. The most profound shift occurred on 28 February 1943, when the division permanently retired its horses and converted to infantry formations. Today, the division remains a subordinate unit of the III Armored Corps, continuing a legacy that spans from the horse-mounted era to modern armored warfare.
